What is the EPF Withdrawal?

EPF withdrawal is fully tax-free after five years of continuous service. Withdraw earlier and the entire amount becomes taxable — the employer's contribution and interest as salary income, your own contribution reversing any 80C benefit claimed.

TDS of 10% applies to premature withdrawals above ₹50,000 (30% without PAN), but TDS is not the final tax — you still owe the difference up to your slab.

Formula & worked example

If service ≥ 5 years: fully exempt
Otherwise: TDS 10% (with PAN) above ₹50,000, plus tax at slab on filing

Worked example: a ₹6,00,000 balance withdrawn after 3 years with PAN → TDS of ₹60,000 deducted immediately. At a 20% slab plus cess the actual tax is ₹1,24,800, so the net amount is about ₹4,75,200. Waiting until five years of service would have made the entire ₹6 lakh tax-free.

Smart tips

Is EPF withdrawal taxable?

Not after five years of continuous service. Withdrawal before that makes the entire amount taxable at your slab rate.

What is the TDS rate on EPF withdrawal?

10% for premature withdrawals above ₹50,000 with PAN, or 30% without PAN. No TDS applies after five years of service.

Does service with different employers count?

Yes, provided you transferred the PF balance rather than withdrawing it between jobs.

How can I avoid tax on PF withdrawal?

Complete five years of continuous service, or transfer the balance to your new employer instead of withdrawing.
