What is the Subscription Cost?

Subscriptions are designed to be forgettable. Individually they are trivial — ₹199 here, ₹499 there — but the annual total surprises almost everyone, and the opportunity cost over a decade is larger still.

The most useful figure here is the last one: what the same money becomes if invested. It reframes a subscription from "₹500 a month" into "₹1.15 lakh over ten years".

Formula & worked example

Annual cost = Monthly total × 12
Future value = Σ monthly amount compounded at expected return

Worked example: ₹1,200 streaming + ₹199 music + ₹900 apps + ₹2,000 gym + ₹700 other = ₹4,999 a month, or ₹59,988 a year. Invested at 12% instead, that becomes about ₹11.6 lakh in 10 years and ₹49.9 lakh in 20 — for services you may barely use.

How to use this subscription cost calculator

  1. Check your card and UPI statements for the last three months — you will find charges you forgot.
  2. Enter each category's monthly total; convert annual plans by dividing by 12.
  3. Include gym and club memberships, which are usually the largest single item.
  4. Look at the 10 and 20-year figures before renewing anything.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the average person spend on subscriptions?

Urban Indian households commonly spend ₹2,000–6,000 a month across streaming, music, apps, cloud storage and gym — ₹24,000–72,000 a year.

Are annual subscriptions worth it?

They typically save 15–20%, but only if you genuinely use the service for the full year. Otherwise a monthly plan you can cancel is cheaper.

How do I find forgotten subscriptions?

Search three months of bank and card statements for recurring identical amounts, and check the subscriptions section of your Google Play and App Store accounts.

What is the real cost of a ₹500 monthly subscription?

₹6,000 a year — but invested at 12% it would be about ₹1.15 lakh in ten years. That is the number worth weighing against how often you use it.
