What is the Sweden Income Tax?

Sweden's income tax is mostly municipal, averaging around 32% and varying by kommun. A state tax of 20% applies only to income above roughly SEK 615,300.

Two features reduce the burden significantly: the basic deduction (grundavdrag) and the job tax credit (jobbskatteavdrag), which cuts tax directly for employment income.

Employer social contributions of about 31.42% are paid on top of salary and never appear on your payslip.

Formula & worked example

Taxable = Salary − basic deduction
Tax = Municipal rate × taxable + 20% state tax above threshold − job tax credit

Worked example: SEK 600,000 with a 32.4% municipal rate. After the basic deduction, municipal tax is about SEK 184,680, with no state tax since income is below the threshold. The job tax credit of SEK 35,000 reduces this to roughly SEK 149,680, leaving net pay near SEK 450,320 — about SEK 37,527 a month.
